1 Kings 15:11
New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
Asa did what was right in the sight of the Lord, as his father David had done.
Ray of Hope
Explore: After Solomon’s fall from grace it seemed that there was only one disaster after another in 1 Kings. The people of God were divided, both sides were worshipping other gods and many were involved in detestable practices. There seemed to be little hope for Israel and Judah. But then a ray of hope is born. Asa worked hard in his 41 year reign of Judah. He stopped wrongful worship practices, he expelled all idols and he even demoted his family from positions of power. King Asa ‘did what was right in the eyes of the Lord’ and he was a ray of hope in the line of David.Application: We may not be WonderWoman or SuperMan but we can be a ray of hope in someone’s life. To obey God we must love Him and love others. While this sounds simple it’s often very challenging. But the impact it can have on others is outstanding. Our example may encourage others to do the same. Our example may change one person’s life. Our example could give hope to those who are observing from a distance. While Asa lived thousands of years ago it shows us that there is hope in our land. While he came from a family of leaders who turned from God, he was obedient and turned the nation back to God. There are Asas in our world today; people who are working hard to turn people towards God. May we be one of them.
Prayer: Lord, sometimes it can be really challenging to stand up for what we believe in. Help us to hold true to our faith and continue to worship you. Amen.
Who is the Asa in your life? Who is that person who gives you a ray of hope and helps to turn you back to God?
