Psalm 103:13

New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

As a father has compassion for his children,
so the Lord has compassion for those who fear him.

A FATHER’S COMPASSION

By: LEANNE JANZEN

What’s your deepest fear? Maybe you’re afraid to get close to other people, or you’re scared to death of failure. You might live in trepidation of someday dying alone. Or the minute anyone says the words “public speaking,” your heart starts clobbering out of your chest. For me, I fear I’ll end up disappointing the people I love most in the world.

We all have things that we dread, things that make us feel like lying down and pulling the covers over our heads and never coming up for air.

When I find myself in this ball of anxiety, I take great solace in Psalm 103. What a beautiful picture of the Father’s heart for His children! When I’m living out of my fears, God looks at me with incredible care, like any human father would.

He has fierce compassion on all His children; not only does He want justice for the oppressed, He’s slow to get angry and doesn’t give us what we deserve when we’re wrong. And then there’s this statement: “For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His love for those who fear Him” (Psalm 103:6-12).

He fights for us when we’re mistreated, has compassion for us, and loves us beyond measure. Though He’s King of everything, He’s full of tenderness for His children.

Dear God, Thank You for Your Father’s heart, for Your infinite compassion, grace, and love for us. We are so grateful that You protect us and provide for us. Forgive us when we are consumed by our fears; help us to put our trust and faith in You alone. Amen.

TAKE ACTION

It’s so easy to forget the ways in which God has had compassion on us. Take some time to reflect on how He has shown you His Father’s heart in the past, and thank Him for His never-ending love for you.
